Switching Academic Programs: Considerations and Process

Modified on Tue, 6 May at 1:51 PM

If you are considering changing your academic program at Nexford University (for example, moving from a certificate to a degree program, or switching between degree types), it is possible to do so without undergoing the full admissions process again. The first step is a consultation with your Success Advisor.

Key Considerations Before Changing Programs

Before you request a change, it's important to understand the following:

  • New Admission Requirements: Each academic program at Nexford has distinct admission criteria. If you are moving to a different program, especially one at a higher academic level, you may be required to provide additional documentation or evidence to demonstrate your eligibility.

  • Tuition Fee Differences: Tuition fees vary between programs. A change in your program will likely mean an adjustment to your tuition costs. You may need to review your budget and, if applicable, discuss this with your sponsor.

  • GPA Recalculation: Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is specific to the program in which it was earned. Grades from your previous academic program will not transfer or contribute to your GPA in your new academic program. You will begin with a fresh GPA calculation in the new program.
(Note: While your GPA doesn't transfer, discuss with your Success Advisor if any previously completed courses might be considered for credit or recognition in the new program, where applicable and aligned.)
  • Program Suitability: Reflect on your career goals and academic interests to ensure the new program is the right fit for you.

How to Initiate a Program Change

  1. Consult Your Success Advisor: You do not need to reapply to the university. Instead, schedule a session with your Success Advisor.

  2. Discuss Your Plans:This meeting is a consultative session where you can:
    • Explain your reasons for wanting to change programs.
    • Explore your eligibility for the desired new program.
    • Understand any additional requirements or implications (academic, financial, time commitment).

  3. Process the Change: If you decide to proceed and are deemed eligible, your Success Advisor will guide you through the necessary steps to formally process the program change.
