Nexford University offers flexibility for learners who need a short break between courses or a longer pause from their studies. This article explains both options, how they work, and what to expect.
Leave of Absence (LOA)
If you need a more extended pause from your studies due to personal, financial, or academic reasons, you may be eligible to request a formal Leave of Absence (LOA).
Note: This article reflects the policies in the current catalog. If you are enrolled under a previous catalog version, your LOA terms may differ. Please refer to your applicable catalog or contact your Success Advisor for clarification.
Who Is Eligible
The LOA policy applies to learners enrolled in degree programs only. Learners in single courses or certificate programs are not eligible. Learners currently on academic or financial suspension are also not eligible.
LOA Bank Limits
Rather than a single fixed LOA period, Nexford uses a personal LOA bank -- the total time you may spend on leave across your entire program. The limit depends on your program type:
| Program | Total LOA Allowance |
|---|---|
| Associate degree programs (e.g., AAS) | 6 months |
| Bachelor's degree programs (e.g., BBA) | 12 months |
| Master's degree programs (e.g., MBA, MSDA) | 4 months |
You may take multiple LOAs over the course of your program as long as the total does not exceed your bank. No more than 180 calendar days of LOA may be taken within any rolling 12-month period. LOA usage does not reset if you are readmitted to the same program -- any time previously used counts toward your total.
How to Request an LOA
LOA requests must be submitted in advance and in writing. An LOA cannot take effect in the same month it is requested, and requests apply only to future months.
Before submitting, speak with your Success Advisor to confirm your remaining LOA balance and agree on your start and end dates.
Your written request must include:
- The reason for your LOA
- Your requested start date
- Your expected return date
Submit your request to success@nexford.edu or through the Academic Request Form. All requests are subject to University approval.
Emergency Situations
In documented emergency circumstances, an LOA may be approved without prior request. The effective date will be determined by the University based on when the emergency prevented you from continuing your studies, supported by institutional records. Contact the Learner Success Team as soon as possible if you find yourself in this situation.
What Happens During Your LOA
- Tuition billing is paused and any unused tuition is credited toward future study.
- Your access to Canvas is suspended for the duration of the LOA.
- You are expected to complete all coursework and receive a final grade before your LOA begins. If a course is still active when your LOA starts, you will be withdrawn from it in accordance with the University's withdrawal policy.
Returning from LOA
You are expected to resume enrollment on your approved return date. The University will send reminder notifications before that date. If you do not confirm or resume your studies by the approved return date, you will be administratively withdrawn. If you wish to return earlier than planned, contact your Success Advisor to arrange the early return.
Questions?
Speak with your Success Advisor before making any decisions about pausing your studies. They can confirm your eligibility, check your LOA balance, and help you plan your return.
