Academic Warning: What It Means and How to Improve

Modified on Tue, 6 May at 8:54 PM

An Academic Warning is an official notification from Nexford University. It is issued when a learner's academic performance does not meet the minimum requirements necessary for successful progression in their program. This warning serves as an important early alert, providing you with an opportunity to improve and avoid further academic sanctions, such as Academic Probation.

Reasons for Receiving an Academic Warning

You may receive an Academic Warning if your academic performance indicates you are not meeting the university's minimum standards. Common reasons include:

  • Maintaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) below the required threshold for your program:
    • Undergraduate Programs (e.g., AAS, BBA): A cumulative GPA below 2.0.
    • Graduate Programs (e.g., MBA): A cumulative GPA below 3.0.

  • Maintaining an Unsatisfactory Course Completion Pace:
    • Successfully completing less than 67% (two-thirds) of the total courses you have attempted in your program.

The Academic Warning Period and Expectations

  • Duration: Upon receiving an Academic Warning, you will have a period of two (2) months to improve your academic performance and meet the minimum requirements. (This period excludes any time taken for an approved Leave of Absence).

  • Focus: Receiving a Warning is a strong indicator that you need to dedicate more focused time and effort to your studies.

If your academic performance does not show the necessary improvement and meet the minimum requirements by the end of this two-month warning period, your academic standing may be escalated to Academic Probation.

It is crucial to take an Academic Warning very seriously. Continued failure to meet standards after progressing to Probation can ultimately lead to dismissal from the university.

Taking Action and Utilizing Support

Receiving an Academic Warning is a critical time to reassess your study habits and engagement. Nexford is here to support you:

  • Follow Guidance: Pay close attention to and implement the advice provided by the Learner Success team and your Course Professor(s). Carefully review all assignment feedback, as it contains valuable information for improvement.

  • Your Commitment: It is essential to dedicate sufficient time to your studies, actively participate in your courses, and utilize the support resources available to you.

We believe in your potential to succeed! Use this Academic Warning period as an opportunity to make positive changes, get back on track, and achieve your learning goals at Nexford University.
