Who can I talk to about changing a grade?

Modified on Tue, 7 Jul at 5:29 PM

If you have concerns about a grade you received, the first step is to contact the instructor who graded your work. Reach out through the course inbox in Canvas to discuss the feedback and ask for clarification on how the grade was determined.

The Learner Success Team is not able to change grades or explain grading decisions on behalf of faculty. Grade-related questions must go through your instructor first.

Note: This article reflects the policies in the current catalog. Learners enrolled under a previous catalog version should refer to their applicable catalog or contact Learner Success for clarification on the grade appeal process.

If You Are Still Not Satisfied: Formal Grade Appeal

If you have spoken with your instructor and exhausted all avenues with faculty, you may file a formal grade appeal with the University Review Committee (URC).

Eligibility and requirements:

  • All avenues for resolution with the course instructor must have been exhausted before filing
  • Your appeal must be filed within 5 days of the course end date -- appeals submitted after this window will not be accepted
  • You must submit a personal statement and all relevant supporting documentation along with your appeal

How to file:

  1. Contact your Success Advisor -- they will help you assemble your appeal petition, including your personal statement and supporting documents
  2. Submit the Final Course Appeal Form through the Academic Request Form and select Make a Grade Appeal as the request type

What happens next:

  • The URC will review your request and supporting documentation
  • You will receive a response within 5 business days
  • If you are not satisfied with the URC's decision, you may follow the Grievance Policy outlined in the University Catalog within 3 days of receiving the URC response

Questions?

If you are unsure whether your situation warrants a formal appeal, speak with your Success Advisor before the 5-day window closes.
