General tips for using LIRN effectively.
Accessing LIRN and Librarian Support
- Access LIRN via Canvas: Log into your Canvas course(s) and select the "Library" button, typically found in the main Canvas navigation menu on the left. This will direct you to the LIRN portal.
- Locate "Ask a Librarian": Once you are on the LIRN platform, find and click the "Ask a Librarian" button. This is usually located on the right edge of the screen.
- Submit Your Question: Selecting this button will open the "Online Librarian Support form." Please enter all the requested information and clearly state your question or research need in the space provided.
For a detailed visual walkthrough of these steps, please watch this video:
Librarian Office Hours & Availability
Live librarian support via the "Ask a Librarian" service is available during the following hours:
- Monday - Friday: 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM EST/EDT
- Saturday & Sunday: 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST/EDT
Please Note: Requests submitted outside of these office hours will typically be reviewed and answered the next morning.
Tips for Asking Effective Questions
To help the LIRN librarians provide you with the best possible support, please consider these tips when submitting your query:
- Click the ‘Submit’ button only one time to avoid duplicate requests.
- Be specific: Narrower, focused topics are generally easier for librarians to assist with than very broad topics.
- Specify resource types: If you have particular needs, mention what types of resources you are looking for (e.g., eBooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, industry reports).
Scope of Librarian Support
- LIRN Librarians are experts in research, database navigation, citation help, and finding academic resources within the LIRN platform.
- They do not have access to Nexford's Learning Management System (Canvas), your specific course assignments (beyond the research component), grades, or internal Nexford administrative systems.
For questions related to course content not involving library research, assignment specifics, or grades, please contact your professor.
For general Nexford navigation or policy questions, contact your Success Advisor.
