Canvas sends notifications to keep you informed about various course activities, messages, deadlines, and announcements. While Canvas has default notification settings, you have full control to customize these preferences to determine how often and for which activities you receive alerts.
Notification Delivery Types
For most activities within Canvas, you can select one of four delivery preferences for how you are notified (e.g., via email or push notification if using the mobile app):
- Notify me right away (ASAP): Receive an immediate notification for each specific activity as it occurs.
- Daily summary: Receive a single email at the end of the day summarizing all activities from that day.
- Weekly summary: Receive one email per week (typically on a Saturday, but this can vary) summarizing all activities from the past week.
- Don't send (Notifications off): You will not receive any notifications for that particular activity type.
How to Change Notification Settings
- Log in to Canvas: Access Canvas through the myNXU portal (mynxu.nexford.edu) or your usual Canvas access point.
- Access Your Account: In the Global Navigation menu (the dark, vertical bar usually found on the far left of your screen), click on your "Account" icon or link.
- Select "Notifications": From the menu that slides out from your Account, click on "Notifications."
- Customize Preferences:On the Notifications preference page, you'll see a list of different course and account activities (e.g., Announcements, Due Dates, Submission Comments, Conversation Messages, Grading, etc.).
- For each activity, you can set a preference for how you receive notifications (e.g., to your primary email, push notifications if using the mobile app).
- Click the icon corresponding to your desired delivery type (Notify me right away, Daily summary, Weekly summary, or Don't send) for each activity and notification channel listed. Your changes are usually saved automatically.
You can also adjust your notification preferences directly within the Canvas Student mobile app. Push notification settings are primarily managed here.
Why Customize Your Notifications?
Tailoring your notification settings can help you:
- Stay informed about important course updates and deadlines without feeling overwhelmed by excessive emails or alerts.
- Receive timely reminders for critical items.
- Personalize your learning experience to match your study habits and communication preferences.
We recommend reviewing and adjusting your notification settings early in your program and then periodically as your needs or courses change, to ensure they best support your learning.
