Joining Professor-Led Workshops and Drop-In Sessions in Canvas

Modified on Tue, 6 May at 8:26 PM

Your professors at Nexford University may occasionally host optional live engagement sessions, drop-in Q&A hours, or interactive workshops. These sessions are designed to supplement your learning, provide opportunities for real-time interaction, and help reinforce concepts from your course modules. They are typically conducted using BigBlueButton, an online conferencing tool integrated within Canvas.

How You'll Be Notified About Optional Sessions

Information about upcoming optional live sessions, including dates, times, and topics, will usually be communicated by your professor through:

  • Canvas Announcements in your course.
  • The Canvas Calendar.
  • Messages in the Canvas Inbox.

How to Join a Live Session

  1. Navigate to Your Course: Log into Canvas and go to the specific course homepage.
  2. Access BigBlueButton: In the course navigation menu, click on the link labeled "BigBlueButton"
  3. Find the Session: On the BigBlueButton page, look under a section typically titled "New Conferences" or "Scheduled Sessions." You should see the upcoming session listed with its name and start time.
  4. Join the Session: Click the "Join" button next to the relevant session name to enter the live virtual room.

How to Access Recordings of Past Sessions

If your professor has recorded a live session and made it available, you can usually access it later:

  1. Return to BigBlueButton: Go to the same "BigBlueButton" page within your Canvas course.
  2. Find Concluded Sessions: Look for a tab or section often labeled "Concluded Conferences".
  3. Select the Recording: A list of past sessions will appear. Click the small arrow icon (▶) next to the session name to reveal a link to the recording.
